Kurt Shafer invented this smart speed controller years ago to enable whole house fans to be controlled automatically. It monitors the temperature in your home or in your office or building and automatically adjusts the speed of the fan motor to optimize its air flow and power use. As an example, if the temperature is 10 degrees or more higher than your desired temperature the SmartSpeed tells the motor to run at top speed.

As the temperature drops below 10 degrees hotter the speed control reduces the fan speed (and therefor the power consumption) linearly until the fan is at 20% of peak speed in order to maintain air flow at low power. If the air heats up the SmartSpeed increases the fan speed.
