Al and Cathlyn were married in 1943 and I was born in 1944. Cathlyn passed as I was being born and Al was devastated. He left me with his sister, Margaret Thorwaldson Shafer, with the agreement that should he not return from work flying airplanes for the China National Air Corporation (CNAC) Margaret and Arch would adopt me.
His aircraft, a militarized DC-3, suffered a random failure as he was pulling out from a rice dropping flight over the Burma road and turned left to crash into a mountain. Al did not survive but the Chinaman in the back did. Margaret brought me up in southwest Los Angeles, later moving to Palos Verdes.
